Canvas activities for an afterschool club
For afterschool program leaders running painting across several sessions. Attendance varies, pickup times differ and the room is shared, so this guide focuses on flexible progress, supervision, storing work between sessions and keeping track of who has painted what.

Fit painting around attendance and pickup
Children leave at different times. Plan painting in short stretches so a child collected early still finishes a stage, and keep a place for unfinished work.
Choose designs that allow flexible progress
Designs with clear separate areas let a child paint the background one day and the main subject the next. Avoid designs that need one long sitting.
Supervision and helper roles
Plan adult cover for the whole painting time, and a helper for setup and cleanup. We recommend adult supervision for children aged five and under, and children under three should never paint unattended.
Store work between sessions
Unfinished paintings need to lie flat, apart and labeled. A shelf with a space per child, or a drying rack, keeps them safe in a shared room.
Attendance and progress record
Keep this record private to staff. Use initials, not full names, if the sheet is visible in the room.

Reusable tools and new canvases
Brushes and palettes can be reused when cleaned well; canvases are one per painting. Each optional paint kit has 12 colors (3 ml each), two brushes, an apron, a six-well palette and a color-mixing guide. You choose how many kits you need, separately from the number of canvases. Note what is left before ordering more. Send the additional canvas and kit quantities you need, with selected designs and sizes, to discuss your next order.
See schools and learning groups for the main guide.
Questions afterschool leaders ask
What if a child misses several sessions?
Their canvas waits on the shelf. Designs with separate areas let them pick up where they left off.
Can children take unfinished work home?
Decide a rule with families. Many clubs keep work until it is finished so it does not get damaged in bags.
How do we share the room with other groups?
Pack supplies into one labeled box, cover tables, and store canvases flat on a shelf or rack the other groups do not use.
Do we need a kit per child?
No. Shared supplies on each table work well; brushes and palettes can be reused if cleaned well.
