Create a Painting Correspondence Exchange

A painting correspondence exchange connects people through an agreed artwork-and-response activity. Decide who wants to exchange, what they will send and how the exchange ends before anyone begins. It should feel like an invitation, not an obligation to share an address or produce a perfect gift.

Choose the form of exchange

Participants can exchange physical paintings, photographs of their paintings or a written response inspired by another person's work. These options have different costs and privacy needs. A photograph exchange may suit a group that does not want to share home addresses.

MoMA's interview on mail art explores personal exchange across distance. The canvas activity here is an original organized format, not a recreation of the artists' work or a museum-sponsored program.

Write a short exchange agreement

  • Participants: People who have explicitly opted in.
  • Prompt: One shared starting idea, such as a color associated with a favorite place.
  • Ownership: Whether the physical painting is gifted or remains with its maker.
  • Method: Organizer-mediated collection, agreed shipping or private digital sharing.
  • Response: What the recipient may choose to send back.
  • Limits: Timing, costs and whether images may be shared beyond the group.

For children, use the institution's or family's approved communication arrangements. Do not publish participant addresses or encourage direct contact with strangers.

Keep the painting prompt open

  1. Choose an approachable outline or a small selection of designs.
  2. Let each painter interpret the prompt through color or optional detail.
  3. Prepare suitable paint, brushes, palette, rinse container, towels and protection.
  4. Include a short note explaining one choice, if the painter wants.
  5. Use the agreed exchange route only when the work is ready for handling.

The mixed-design guide helps organize choices. The selection guide helps keep the task manageable.

Plan a gentle response

Offer prompts such as “A detail I noticed…” or “A color this made me want to try….” Do not require a positive review, equal artistic skill or a public reaction. If an exchange is delayed, let the organizer manage it without exposing personal circumstances.

Exchange questions

Can we send painted canvases through the mail?

Arrange suitable packaging and current carrier requirements for the actual work. Do not assume ordinary paper-mail methods suit a stretched canvas.

Can we repeat the exchange?

Yes, after asking participants again and reviewing the workload. Keep the practical plan in a repeat-program record.
