Display and Frame a Finished Stretched Canvas
A finished stretched canvas can become a reminder of a shared painting session. Before choosing a frame or display location, check the actual dimensions, the condition of the painted surface and how the canvas will be supported. The canvas's width and height are only part of the decision.
Measure the canvas you have
Record width, height and depth, including any parts that affect how the frame will fit. Note whether paint extends around the sides and whether you want those edges visible. Do not assume that a frame described by its picture size will accommodate every stretched canvas of that nominal size.
The canvas size guide explains the available painting formats, but a display decision should use measurements from the finished item. If the canvas has changed shape or appears damaged, seek advice before trying to force it into a frame.
Choose how much of the edge to show
- Visible canvas edge: the painting and its sides remain part of the display.
- Framed edge: a suitable frame surrounds the canvas and changes the visual boundary.
- Temporary tabletop presentation: the work is supported by a suitable display stand in a stable location.
These are display approaches, not a statement that frames, stands or hanging hardware are included with a canvas order. Check the actual item and obtain any additional equipment separately.
Make a display record
Write the three measurements, the preferred orientation, the planned location and the edge preference. Example: “Portrait orientation; measured width, height and depth recorded; painted sides should remain visible; display away from the busy entry route.” Take this record and the canvas to a framer if you need a fit recommendation.
Ask the framer or hardware manufacturer about a suitable support method for the canvas and the wall or surface involved. Follow their instructions and weight limits. Avoid improvising attachments through the painted face or assuming that an adhesive intended for a different object will be appropriate.
Check the painting before handling it
Allow the paint to reach the condition required for handling and framing according to the materials used. A surface that looks dry may still need more time before contact or packaging. Keep pressure, wrapping and other objects away from the painted face until suitable handling has been confirmed.
Can several party paintings form a group display? Yes; plan the arrangement on paper first and obtain each owner's agreement. Can guests take their canvases home before deciding on a frame? Usually the display decision can wait, provided transport protects the work. Use the event checklist for collection planning and contact the supplier if you need to confirm the canvas construction before consulting a framer.
