Preparing a Vacation Bible School canvas rotation
For Vacation Bible School coordinators fitting a painting activity into a rotation where groups move between stations. It covers approving the design, fitting the activity into the time slot, adult-led stations, keeping each group's wet paintings separate and getting them home. It makes no curriculum claims.
Business and group-order inquiries: b2b@canvaspaintparty.com.
Have your leaders approve the design
Your church chooses the theme and any wording. A ready-made design can work, or a photo, theme or idea can become an outline through design assistance, which is free, including revisions you request. We reply and prepare a first outline within one business day, and you can ask for a digital preview. Ask leaders to check spelling of any verse or name.
Match the activity to the rotation slot
Rotation slots are short, and groups arrive at different points in their day. Choose a design with large open shapes so children can make real progress in one visit, or plan two visits: base colors on the first day, details on the second.
Prepare adult-led stations
-
Before the first group
Set every place: canvas labeled with a group color, water, paper towel, palette.
-
As a group arrives
Adults seat children and give a one-minute demonstration.
-
During painting
Adults help children start and keep water cups upright.
-
Before the group leaves
Canvases go flat on the drying rack for that group; brushes into rinse water.
-
Between groups
Change water, wipe tables, set the next group's places.
Rotation handoff grid
Fill in a row per group so every adult knows where each group's paintings are.
| Group | Arrives | Adult lead | Wet-work location | Collection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | ________ | ________ | ________ | ________ |
| Group 2 | ________ | ________ | ________ | ________ |
| Group 3 | ________ | ________ | ________ | ________ |
Keep each group's wet work separate
Give each group its own drying area or shelf, and label it. Paintings from different groups look alike, so separation saves confusion at pickup.
Identification and caregiver collection
Write each child's name and group on the back of the canvas before painting. At the end of the week, hand paintings to caregivers by name. We recommend adult supervision for children aged five and under, and children under three should never paint unattended.
Contact us with the canvas quantities for each rotation group, selected designs and sizes, optional kit quantities and the date supplies are needed. We recommend contacting us at least two weeks before; see how early to contact us.
Questions VBS coordinators ask
Can children finish in one rotation?
A design with large open shapes gives a good chance of finishing a stage in one visit. For detailed designs, plan two visits.
Where do paintings dry between days?
Flat, on a labeled shelf or rack per group, away from where the next groups set up.
Can we include a verse or the VBS theme name?
Yes. Your leaders choose and check the wording; design assistance can add it to an outline.
How early should we order?
We recommend contacting us at least two weeks before your first day; that is advice, not a delivery guarantee.
