Outlined canvas, blank canvas, numbered painting or a class?

Four painting experiences are often grouped together, but they start from different places and leave different decisions to the painter. Use this guide to choose the one that matches what your group actually wants, then plan from there. We make one of the four: the pre-outlined stretched canvas.

Start with the experience you want

Ask one question first: what should the painter decide? Some people want to invent a picture from nothing. Some want a picture already laid out so they can enjoy color. Some want every color decided for them. Some want a person to teach them step by step. Each answer points to a different kind of activity, and none of them is better in general.

What each option prepares, and what it leaves to you

A comparison of the formats in general. Details vary between makers and providers, so check the actual product or class you are considering.

Pre-outlined canvas Blank canvas Numbered painting Hosted class
Starting surface A stretched canvas with the design printed as a black outline An empty stretched canvas or panel A surface with small numbered areas Whatever the class provider supplies
Who draws the picture Already done: the outline The painter Already done, in detail Usually the instructor demonstrates
Who chooses colors The painter The painter Set by the number key Often follows the instructor
Instruction included None needed to start; guides are optional None A color key A live or recorded lesson
Who organizes the session You or your group You or your group Usually individual The class provider
Good fit for Groups who want everyone to start at once and choose their own colors Confident painters who want full freedom People who enjoy following a precise key People who want to be taught

Which decisions stay with the painter

Painting involves several separate choices: the subject, the composition, the colors and the brushwork. A pre-outlined canvas settles the first two, so a nervous beginner never faces an empty white surface, and leaves color and brushwork open. A blank canvas leaves everything open. A numbered system settles almost everything. A class shares the decisions with the teacher.

If your group wants to paint the same subject but finish with different paintings, an outline usually fits. What a pre-outlined stretched canvas is explains the product in detail.

Supplies are not the same as a session

Buying canvases is not the same as booking a class. With an outlined or blank canvas, someone in your group sets up, keeps time and helps people start. A class provider does that work for you, and the price usually reflects it. We supply pre-outlined canvases and optional paint kits. We do not provide hosts, instructors, entertainers or venues. Our guide to running a session shows what organizing involves so you can decide whether you want to do it yourself.

Check your practical constraints

The same checks apply whichever format you choose. Our setup checklist and inclusive planning guide go further.

Time

  • How long people will actually paint, not the length of the whole event
  • Whether paintings need to go home the same day

Space

  • A table place for each painter and somewhere for wet paintings to dry
  • Water, light and a surface that can get paint on it

People

  • Who will greet people, start the session and answer questions
  • Anyone who would find a choice of design, a quieter seat or help with reaching useful

If a pre-outlined canvas fits

Every canvas is primed cotton on a wooden stretcher, stapled at the back, with the design printed as a permanent black outline that several coats of paint can cover. Canvases come in 8 × 10 and 11 × 14 inches, portrait or landscape, and one order can mix sizes. Choose a ready-made design, or a photo, theme or idea can become an outline through design assistance, which is free, including revisions you request. We reply and prepare a first outline within one business day, and you can ask for a digital preview. Already have a finished outline? Online ordering for ready outlines is not available yet; if you like, email it to info@canvaspaintparty.com and we will arrange the order with you. Please do not send payment card details by email.

Optional paint kits are available if you do not have supplies; see canvas only or a paint kit. Painting activity formats helps you choose how people paint together.

Keep planning
