How to host a paint and sip gathering

For adults hosting friends at home or in a venue. "Paint and sip", "sip and paint" and "paint night" all describe the same idea: painting with friends while drinks and snacks are on hand. With pre-outlined canvases, nobody needs to lead a lesson. This guide covers drinks, keeping paint and drinks apart, the evening's flow and the host's responsibilities.

What you are planning

A paint and sip is a social evening: each guest paints a pre-outlined canvas while the host provides refreshments. We supply pre-outlined canvases and optional paint kits. We do not provide hosts, instructors, entertainers or venues. We do not supply drinks or bar service. The drinks are your choice, and they do not have to be alcoholic.

Drinks options

Option Works when The host decides
Alcohol-free Mixed groups, daytime, or anyone driving Mocktails, sparkling water, tea or a coffee bar
Wine or cocktails at home Adults only, at a private home Amounts, alternatives for non-drinkers, rides home
A venue's bar Booked room at a café, winery or restaurant The venue's rules on service, age checks and timing

Keep drinks and paint water apart

The classic mistake is a brush rinsed in a wine glass, or a sip from the rinse cup. Use water cups that look nothing like drink glasses, keep drinks on a side table or a tray at each seat's far side, and set food at a separate table. Tell guests at the start which cups are for brushes.

An evening, step by step

  1. Arrive and settle

Drinks poured, aprons on, everyone picks a seat and, if offered, a design.

  2. Start painting

A two-minute welcome: the outline is a guide, colors are your choice, there are no wrong answers.

  3. Break

Halfway, a refill and a stretch while the first layer dries a little.

  4. Finish

Details, a signature, and an optional look at everyone's work.

  5. Wind down

Paintings left flat to dry while guests chat; brushes rinsed before the paint dries.

Designs that suit a social evening

Forgiving subjects such as sunsets, florals and simple landscapes work well, because small slips disappear into the picture. Offer two or three designs so friends can choose, and see mixed-design painting for how many of each to order. Nature ideas are in nature, flower and landscape themes.

The host's responsibilities

  • If alcohol is served, confirm who will provide and serve it, check the applicable age, service and licensing requirements, and agree any venue rules before the event.
  • Have alcohol-free drinks for anyone who prefers them.
  • Ask about food allergies when you invite people.
  • Make sure everyone has a safe way home.

Hosting at a venue

If you book a room at a café or winery, ask about setup time, table covering, where brushes can be rinsed, and when drinks are served. Some venues prefer painting to start before drinks; follow their rules. Leave the room as you found it.

Host checklist

Painting

  • A canvas per guest, plus a spare
  • Paint, brushes and palettes, or optional kits
  • Covers, water cups, paper towels

Refreshments

  • Drinks, including alcohol-free choices
  • Food at a separate table

Guests

  • Invitation says to wear clothes that can get paint on them
  • A drying spot and a way to carry paintings home

Taking paintings home

A wet canvas and a handbag do not mix. Give paintings time to dry flat while the evening winds down, or send them home on a box lid. Write each guest's name on the back before painting starts.

Questions paint and sip hosts ask

Do you supply wine or run the evening?
No. We supply canvases and optional kits; the host arranges everything else.

Do we need someone to teach?
No. The outline does the drawing. The session run sheet has simple hosting cues.

How do we ask about supplies for a large group?
Contact us with your painting headcount, canvas sizes, design choices and optional kit quantities. Ask about current order pricing before setting your event budget.

For current order questions, contact the team. Read shipping and tracking guidance or order-problem and return guidance.
