Paint Your Partner Using a Consented Reference

Painting a partner can be playful when both people understand the activity and choose how they want to be represented. Agree the reference before ordering a custom outline, and make showing the finished painting optional. A shared activity does not require a realistic portrait or a public reveal.

Choose the reference together

Each person can choose a photograph they are comfortable using, agree a simplified portrait concept or decide on a symbolic image instead. Check permission to reproduce the photograph as well as the subject's comfort with the activity. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that appearing in a photograph does not establish ownership of its copyright.

The date-night guide can help you plan the setting. If you use a custom reference, Canvas Paint Party accepts a photo, reference image or ready outline and converts it into a paintable outline. Viewing a preview is optional.

Decide what the painting should emphasize

  • Face and expression: use a clear reference with the features you want retained.
  • Pose and clothing: make the overall silhouette more important than tiny facial details.
  • Shared memory: include a simple setting or object that both people recognize.
  • Symbolic portrait: choose agreed colors and motifs without trying to reproduce a face.

Avoid adding private jokes, body changes or unflattering features as a surprise. Ask whether the other person wants the result to feel playful, recognizable or abstract. The answer can guide simplification without setting a promise of photographic likeness.

Use a reference agreement card

Write: “Image chosen,” “Details to keep,” “Details to omit,” “Who may see it” and “What happens to the finished canvas.” For example: “Use the outdoor portrait we selected; keep glasses and jacket; omit the background crowd; private activity; each painter keeps their own work.” Keep the card private and share only the information needed for the design request.

Choose a composition with regions that suit the available painting time. The outline readiness guide helps identify tiny areas that may need simplifying before they become frustrating to paint.

Make the session a shared choice

Set out separate workspaces and allow different palettes. Decide in advance whether you will see each other's paintings while working, reveal them afterward or keep them private. Do not turn the result into a likeness contest unless both people specifically want that format.

What if one person changes their mind about a portrait? Switch to an agreed subject or pause the plan; the activity should remain voluntary. Can you post the paintings online? Ask separately about sharing the reference, the painting and any event photograph. For a suitable image and clear design instructions, use the custom canvas request.
