Painting themes and seasons

Once you know who is painting and how, choose what the paintings will show. This page groups design directions, explains how detail affects the session, and shows where each theme leads: a guide, the Shop when designs are available, or a custom outline.

Start with subject and meaning

Before looking at designs, ask two things: what will people enjoy painting, and does the subject need to mean something? A birthday may call for a favorite animal; a retirement for a place the person loves; a school night for a theme the class is studying. A subject with meaning is worth a little more detail. A subject chosen just for fun can stay simple.

Subject and detail chooser

Pick a row for the subject, then a column for how much detail suits your group. The last column says whether to look for a ready-made design or prepare your own.

Subject Broad version: large open shapes Detailed version: more small areas Ready-made or your own artwork
Flowers and gardens One large bloom A bouquet or garden bed Check the Shop; your own photo works well
Animals and pets A simple animal silhouette A pet portrait with features Pets need your own photo (design assistance)
Landscapes Sky, hills and one tree Layers of hills, water and trees Either
Buildings and places A skyline silhouette A street view or a house portrait Usually your own reference
Seasons and holidays A single seasonal symbol A full seasonal scene Check the Shop for the season
Interests and objects One object, such as a sneaker An object with pattern and detail Either
Words and names A short word with a simple shape Lettering with decoration Your own wording (design assistance)

An existing design or new artwork?

A theme on this page is a direction, not a product. To paint it, either find a ready-made design in the Shop that fits, or prepare your own artwork. Your own photo, sketch or idea can become an outline through design assistance, which is free, including revisions you request. Before choosing, check that the outline is paintable.

Theme guides: nature, flowers and landscapes, seasons, buildings and places and sneakers on canvas.

Theme guides

Detail matters more than subject

A simple flower and a detailed garden are both "nature", but they suit very different groups. Large open shapes suit children, short sessions and relaxed painters; small shapes suit confident painters with time. Size helps too: 8 × 10 keeps shapes bold, 11 × 14 leaves room for detail. See choosing a canvas size.

Your own theme

A local view, a pet, a team logo or a family photo can become an outline through design assistance, which is free, including revisions you request. We reply and prepare a first outline within one business day. Use only images and logos you have permission to use.

Designs in the Shop

Ready-made designs are added to the Shop over time. A theme listed here is a direction, not a promise that a matching design is in stock.

Online ordering is not available yet.

Culture, faith and causes

For cultural and religious observances and for cause symbols, use the imagery and wording the community itself chooses, and check movable dates each year. See seasonal ideas and nonprofits and service groups.
